Mexico redeems itself

I'm not sure I would ever see this, but Mexico is actually ahead of the U.S. on a major issue. While this is not the broad decriminalization that should be the goal, this is nonetheless a major step forward. Of course, there is the usual sniping by U.S. politicians (at least now I know the name of San Diego's mayor) who refuse to believe the obvious: that the War on Drugs has been a massive failure. Legalization would lead to less violence and drug-related crime, not more.

I have concerns about the human cost of legalizing all drug use. In the long run, we would probably see greater use of hard drugs.

A case could probably be made for decrimializing marijuana. I want the old hippie to feel comfortable turning in the crack or crystal meth dealer down the street.

We need to severely punish the drug dealers and allocate more resources to treating users for their addiction.
